When it is one or two centimeters away, the number should change to 0. If you move your hand closer and the 5 changes to 0, the proximity detection is correct. In case the 5 does not change, even if you cover the entire top of the phone with your hand, it means that it is not working properly. know if the proximity sensor is working properly
How to Turn On/Off Proximity sensor. If the Xiaomi smartphone's screen doesn't turn off during a call, it's possible that we accidentally enable functions with the ear such as the speaker. To avoid this, we can activate the proximity sensor, which darkens or turns off the screen during a phone call.
I think you shouldn't look for the firmware on which the sensor will work normally. Such a trifle as a sensor in a phone for 560 euros must work properly from the beginning in stock rom. There is no official support for xiaomi phones here, write about this issue on official mi.com. Or contact an authorized service center with this problem.
Obviously the proximity sensor is at fault. Enter the menu using the code mentioned above, then press the menu/options button and select Calibrate proximity sensor. Once you're there, hold your hand over the proximity sensor (to the right of the front camera) and tap the Calibrate button. That's one thing that could fix it.

In that case, I'll wait for the global launch and try the haptics out at a Xiaomi store (plenty of them here). I'm gunning for the regular 13 because of the flat screen lol. My S20 has decent (by Android standards) haptics. But the Pixel 6 that the OP is comparing against has iPhone-like haptics IIRC. dentistwithcavity.
I had issues on with my other Xiaomi phones with virtual proximity sensors, but it works on this phone flawless for me. Don't think a regular sensor is always better. On OnePlus, the 9R and 9RT phones have a notoriously awful proximity sensor. It's just companies spending 0 on quality control basically and rushing out phones.
